A MULTI-AGENT INTELLIGENT SYSTEM FOR DETECTING UNKNOWNADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS THROUGH COMMUNICATION ANDCOLLABORATIONby AYMAN MANSOURDecember 2012 Advisor: Prof. Hao YingMajor: Electrical EngineeringDegree: Doctor of PhilosophySeveral thousands of drugs are currently available on the U.S. market. A completeunderstanding of the safe use of drugs is not possible at the time when drug is developed ormarketed. At that time, the safety information is only obtained from a few thousand peoplein a typical pre-marketing clinical trial. Clinical trials are not capable of detecting rareadverse drug reactions (ADRs) because of limitations in sample size and trial duration.Early detection of unknown ADRs could save lives and prevent unnecessaryhospitalizations. Current methods largely rely on spontaneous reports which suffer fromserious underreporting, latency, and inconsistent reporting. Thus they are not ideal forrapidly identifying rare ADRs. In this dissertation, I developed a team-based multi-agentintelligent system approach for proactively detecting potential ADR signal pairs (i.e.,potential links between drugs and apparent adverse reactions). The basic idea is thatintelligent agents are capable of collaborating with one another by sharing information and

Kerman Health System Workers Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding the Spontaneous Reporting System for Adverse Drug Reactions

Adverse drug reaction (ADR) is one of the most life threatening problems, and the economic burden of ADR is considerable. The main objective of this study was to assess the attitude of the Kerman health system staff, to evaluate their knowledge of the spontaneous reporting system and to identify the reasons for low reporting rate. In this descriptive study, a Persian translated questio...

A distributed adverse drug reaction detection system using intelligent agents with a fuzzy recognition-primed decision model

Discovering unknown adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in postmarketing surveillance as early as possible is highly desirable. Nevertheless, current postmarketing surveillance methods largely rely on spontaneous reports which suffer from serious underreporting, latency, and inconsistent reporting. Thus these methods are not ideal for rapidly identifying rare ADRs. The multi-agent systems paradigm is...

Adaptive Neural Network Method for Consensus Tracking of High-Order Mimo Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems

This paper is concerned with the consensus tracking problem of high order MIMO nonlinear multi-agent systems. The agents must follow a leader node in presence of unknown dynamics and uncertain external disturbances. The communication network topology of agents is assumed to be a fixed undirected graph. A distributed adaptive control method is proposed to solve the consensus problem utilizing re...

Vehicle-based Intersection Management with Intelligent Agents

Signal-based intersection management will change when vehicles with intelligent capability are available in the future. Intelligent agents embedded in vehicle software will be responsible for vehicle control and route guidance. Intersection management can be achieved through the collaboration of these agents, without a centralized control infrastructure. This research focuses on the use of dist...

Voltage Coordination of FACTS Devices in Power Systems Using RL-Based Multi-Agent Systems

This paper describes how multi-agent system technology can be used as the underpinning platform for voltage control in power systems. In this study, some FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices are properly designed to coordinate their decisions and actions in order to provide a coordinated secondary voltage control mechanism based on multi-agent theory. Each device here is modeled as ...
